Founder Vascular Access Centers and co-founded Rex Medical with Whitfield Gardner in 1999 and directs R & D.

Dr. McGuckin is Director of the Philadelphia Vascular Institute located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. McGuckin’s research interest include: Cardiovascular Systems, Endoscopy and Endosurgery, Peripheral Arterial Disease, Limb Salvage, Percutaneous Oncologic Therapy and therapy related to the End Stage Renal Disease population. He is currently researching recanalization of Central Venous Occlusion using RF ablation. He holds 39 patents and has over 170 pending patents. Dr. McGuckin double majored in Mechanical Engineering and Pre-Medical from the University of Notre Dame in 1983, and received his M.D. from Hahnemann University in 1987, General Surgery in 1988, Masters Degree in Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1990, Diagnostic Imaging in 1995, and completed his Fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1996.

Robert L Worthington-Kirsch, MD was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He attended MIT, from which he received Bachelors Degrees in Molecular Biology and Comparative Western Religion (minor in Ancient and Medieval European History). He then attended Medical School at the University of Massachusetts, receiving his MD in 1986. During his Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in the Philadelphia area, Dr Worthington-Kirsch discovered his passion for Interventional Radiology. He is Board Certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Subspecialty Certified in Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Dr Worthington-Kirsch has been in practice in the Philadelphia area since 1990, concentrating on IR. His main areas of practice are in fibroid embolization, treatment of superficial venous insufficiency, and other IR procedures. Dr Worthington-Kirsch has been actively involved in research surrounding fibroid embolotherapy since 1996, and has the one of the largest single operator experiences with the procedure in the world. He holds an academic appointment as Clinical Associate Professor of Medical Imaging at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr Worthington-Kirsch has also been active in his professional society. He served on the UAE Task Force of the Society of Interventional Radiology since its inception, and continues to serve on SIR’s UAE Advisory Council. He was one of the designers of the FIBROID Registry, and continues to serve on its Steering Committee. He also serves on the Venous Forum of the SIR. He is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology and of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe. He has given numerous invited presentations and scientific papers at the meetings of the SIR, CIRSE, and other Societies.

Dr Worthington-Kirsch and his wife of 27 years have 5 children, 1 grandchild, and several pets. He and his wife breed Russian Blue cats. He serves as the Mohel for his local congregation. He also is a dedicated fly-fisherman in both fresh- and salt-water.

Dr. Sandeep Sharma was one of the first doctors to bring Interventional Nephrology to Pittsburgh.  He has been in practice since 2006 and routinely services patients not only from Pittsburgh, but also from across Western PA to Ohio and West Virginia.  Dr. Sharma has received Board Certifications in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Nephrology.  He is also certified by the American Society of Interventional Nephrology.  Dr. Sharma received his training in interventional procedures from renowned interventionalist, Dr. James McGuckin, and Vascular Surgeon, Dr. John Ross.  He has given presentations at National conferences as well as locally for the Fistual First initiative.  He routinely provides education to dialysis nurses and technicians on the intricacies of access management.  He is a board member of the National Kidney Foundation and a strong proponent of patient education.  He is active within the community to educate people about kidney disease and transplantation.  Dr. Sharma specializes in all aspects of hemodilalysis access maintenance, arm and chest port placement,  and varicose and spider vein treatment.

Dr. Mario Moya is a native of Del Rio, Texas who earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico while on a scholarship program. In 1988 he completed a Surgical Internship at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, Pa. and also a year in Internal Medicine in the same institution in 1989. Dr. Moya then completed his Medical Imaging Residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in 1994. Houston, Texas was his next destination where he completed his Angio Interventional Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also completed additional fellowship work at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital before returning to Philadelphia where he joined the Interventional Section at Mercy Catholic. He has been in private practice since 1995 and from 1998 to 2005 was lead Interventionalist at Nazareth Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia and St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE. He is board certified in Radiology since his completion of training and also earned his Certificate of Added Qualification in Interventional Radiology. Currently he is licensed to practice in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. He is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American College of Radiology, the Radiologic Society of North America, the American College of Phlebology, and the American Institute of Cosmetic Medicine. Dr. Moya’s specialties include all aspects of hemodialysis access maintenance, peripheral arterial disease, limb salvage, spider and varicose vein treatment.

Prior to joining Vascular Access Centers, Dr. Daniel Simon spent seven years at JFK Medical Center where he had taken a lead role in creating the JFK Fibroid Embolization Program.  In addition, he helped develop the Solaris Interventional Cancer Service, the Interventional Stroke Team, and the Interventional Radiology Compression Fracture Program.  As a result of his work in spine care, Dr. Simon was asked by the Kyphon Corporation to serve as a consultant and instructor.

Prior to joining JFK, Dr. Simon spent five years at North Shore University Hospital, where he was the Co-Chief of the Interventional Radiology division.  Under his leadership, the Interventional Services at North Shore tripled in size, adding fibroid empbolization, interventional oncology, spine intervention, and venous access to the already busy department.

Dr. Simon performed his fellowship training in Interventional Radiology at the prestigious University of California San Francisco.  Prior to his fellowship, he completed a four year Residency in Radiology at the North Shore University Hospital.  Before arriving at North Shore, Dr. Simon was an Intern in the Department of Medicine at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles California, where he was honored with the Leo Rigler Award for his outstanding performance as a house officer.

Dr. Simon graduated from Medical School at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Brown University.  Before chosing a career in Medicine, Dr. Simon worked in finance where he was employed as an analyst with the venture capital division of Paine Webber.  He also performed pharmaceutical research for the Perdue Frederick Corporation and the Revlon Healthcare Group.

In addition to his work at JFK, Dr. Simon has served as a consultant to Johnson and Johnson, Gore Medical, the Medtronic Corporation, and Hydromed Sciences.  He is currently a consultant to the Radiology Devices Panel of the FDA, and a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology, the lead journal in the field of Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Simon embraces an approach to medicine that emphasizes not only patient care, but also patient education and patient empowerment in decision making.  In this regard, he welcomes questions and inquiries both formal and informal from the community.

 Dr. Mir Ahmad, MD completed his Internship and Residency in 1998 from Mount Sinai School of Medicine-VA Bronx program and then his Fellowship in Nephrology in 2000 from UMDNJ-Cooper Medical Center, Camden, NJ.. Dr. Ahmad then trained in Hemodialysis Vascular Access under Dr. James McGuckin, MD and is certified by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology. Dr Ahmad has been practicing as a Clinical and Interventional Nephrologist in New Jersey since 2000. In addition he is a Medical Director of FMC – Maplewood, NJ since 2005. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds active Medical Licenses in New Jersey. He is also trained in Endovascular management of Peripheral Arterial Disease. Dr. Ahmad specializes in all aspects of hemodialysis vascular access, fistula maturation, chest port placement, peripheral arterial disease and vascular medicine.

Dr. William Yu graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1994 as part of the 6-year combined BA/MD program, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency from 1994-1997 and his Nephrology Fellowship from 1997-1999, both at Northwester University School of Medicine in Chicago. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He has practiced in a private practice setting for over 6 years in the Baltimore area. Despite being in private practice, Dr. Yu was active in teaching and had a part-time academic position at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine from 2000-2005. Furthermore, Dr. Yu was awarded the “Faculty Teacher Award” in 2001 by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Sinai Hospital Program in Internal Medicine. In 2001, Dr. Yu was trained in Interventional Nephrology procedures, specifically Hemodialysis Vascular Access procedures, by Interventional Radiologist Dr. W. Perry Arnold as well as Interventional Nephrologist, Dr. Gerald Beathard. By the beginning of 2002, Dr. Yu was the first practicing Interventional Nephrologists in the Maryland and Washington, DC area. In early 2004, Dr. Yu was one of the first Interventional Nephrologists certified in Hemodialysis Vascular Access Procedures by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN). To date, he has performed over 5,000 procedures and has helped train several other Interventional Nephrologists. Dr. Yu specializes in all aspects of hemodialysis vascular access including AV fistula maturation, chest port placement and varicose vein treatment.

Dr. Parikh graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He received his medical training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston followed by a residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Parikh completed a Nephrology Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He currently works with the Fistula First Initiative (Network 6), the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and Emory University on clinical research projects to evaluate and improve vascular access outcomes for hemodialysis patients. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the Renal Physicians Association, the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Klyachkin received his medical training at Saratov Medical Institute in the Russian Federation. He graduated Cum Laude in 1978. He went on to complete his Internship in General Surgery followed by a Residency and Fellowship in General and Vascular Surgery at the same institution. From 1983 to 1991 Dr. Klyachkin was Assistant Professor, General Surgery and Vascular Surgeon, Department of Surgery, Saratov Medical Institute. In 1991 he was a Research Fellow, Department of Surgery, Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Schroder graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He received his medical training at New York University School of Medicine. He went on to Intern in General Surgery at New York University Bellevue followed by a Residency in General Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. He became Chief Resident, General Surgery in 1998 at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He then went on to complete a Research Fellowship and Clinical Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is a Fellow, American College of Surgeons.

Geoffrey L Risley, MD, FACS

Dr. Risley is a board certified vascular surgeon with expertise in endovascular management of all aspects of arterial and venous disease. He regularly trains other physicians nationwide in new endovascular techniques and lectures frequently on both arterial and venous disease. He is actively involved in clinical trials studying the latest technical advances in endovascular surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his vascular surgical fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He studied venous disease with his first partner, Dr. John Bergan, a pioneer of modern vein care in San Diego. In 2003 he joined the physicians of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates and serves as the medical director of The Jacksonville Vein Center. Dr. Moore is an expert at minimally invasive vascular surgery who specializes in endovascular procedures at Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Moore graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and completed his residency in surgery at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego before undergoing a fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. Dr. Moore was appointed department head for vascular surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia and is an assistant professor of surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Following his military service, he joined the Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates out of a friendship with Dr. Risley, formed in San Diego years earlier. Dr. Moore directs vascular and endovascular surgery at Baptist Medical Center–Downtown. The American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Surgery–Vascular Surgery and the Board of Vascular Medicine, certifies him. Alfred Harding, MD, FACS, RPVI

Dr. Harding received his medical degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia. He completed his residency in general surgery and fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Missouri–Columbia where he also served on the faculty before moving to Jacksonville in 1990. He has been instrumental in developing the Health-Grade rated No. 1 vascular surgery program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, and has served as the chief of the section of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery and the immediate past president of the medical staff. He has extensive experience in the repair of abdominal aortic aneursyms and endovascular peripheral vascular surgery. Dr. Harding has a special interest in non-invasive diagnosis of vascular disease and is a registered physician in vascular interpretation (RPVI). Dr. Harding is a fellow with the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, Jacksonville Vascular Society and the Florida Vascular Society.

Dr. Vo is a graduate of The Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency at the University of Chicago and his fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Vo was on staff at the Mayo Clinic–Rochester in the department of vascular surgery until he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at Shands–Jacksonville, a part of the University of Florida. In 2011, he joined the Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates and maintains privileges at St. Vincent’s, Baptist, Memorial, Orange Park and St. Luke’s Hospitals. Dr. Vo is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Surgery–Vascular Surgery. Dr. Salazar is a graduate of Rhodes College at Memphis. He received his medical training at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. His training included an Internship in Internal Medicine at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland Ohio. Vascular Access Center’s Dr. Jason Kendell Morris has been in the Mississippi Delta for over 13 years.  He graduated from Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon Georgia in 1993.   He attended Baptist Medical Hospital’s radiology residency program in Memphis, Tennessee from 1993-1997.  Dr. Morris is board certified in diagnostic radiology and specializes in interventional radiology, pain management, and digital mammography. He is a member of the American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, Mississippi State Medical Association, Radiological Society of North America, and the Society of Interventional Radiology.  

Dr. Morris is currently the Chief of Radiology at Vascular Access Center in Cleveland, Mississippi, where he resides with his wife and 3 children.

Dr. Sanger has been taking care of dialysis patients in New Orleans since 2004 and has been with Vascular Access Centers since 2008. Before this he completed a fellowship in nephrology at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Sanger completed his internal medicine training at Bellevue Hospital and the New York University Medical Center in Manhattan. Dr. Sanger graduated from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine in 1998 and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. The disruption to the health care system after hurricane Katrina posed many challenges for the dialysis patients of the New Orleans region. Dr. Sanger has been proud to be a part of the rebuilding of that system and has taken a special interest in insuring that dialysis patients have speedy access to unparalleled interventional vascular care. Dr. Sanger is a firm believer that the best patient outcomes occur when the advantages of technology are combined with humane and empathetic care.

Dr. Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Graduate degree from Baylor University and the University Of North Texas Health Science Center Ft. Worth. Dr. Smith completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Dallas, Methodist Hospitals of Dallas, and Parkland Hospital. He completed his Fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Baylor University Medical Center, VA Dallas, and Parkland Hospital. He trained in Interventional and Endovascular Medicine at Harvard University and the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, Memphis. Prior to joining Vascular Access Centers, Dr. Smith was a partner in Dallas Nephrology Associates practicing Interventional Medicine there for 10 years, performing over 12,000 procedures. In addition, he maintains teaching positions with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and is associated with The University of Texas Houston School of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston. Dr. Smith specializes in all aspect of hemodialysis vascular access maintenance including AV fistula maturation.

Dr. Gardner is a Vascular Surgeon who graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.  After a General Surgery Residency at the US Public Heath Service Hospital in New Orleans, he trained in vascular surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.  He is Board Certified in Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Gardner is on the active Medical Staff of several local acute care hospitals. He has served on several medical executive committees and as Chief of Staff at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Center. He served as the Medical Staff Representative on the Hospital Board of St. Tammany Parish Hospital for seven years. Dr. Gardner obtained a Masters Degree in Medical Management from the Tulane University school of Public Health and Health Systems Management in 2008. He holds the Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification in Vascular Ultrasound.

Dr. Gardner has been a leader in bringing the latest techniques in the treatment of vascular disease to his community. The first arterial balloon angioplasty, the first intra-vascular stent placement, and the first endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in the Covington community were performed by Dr. Gardner. His vascular surgical and angiographic experiences make him uniquely qualified to perform outpatient vascular access procedures. His vast experience in the surgical placement of dialysis shunts, fistulas, ports and catheters, makes him a uniquely qualified angiographer. His experience with the surgical treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease makes him qualified to evaluate all treatment options. He is the most experienced actively practicing vascular surgeon in his community.

Fraser M.D. is a native Californian, born in the rural Sacramento Valley.  He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, and served during Operation Desert Storm.  Serving as a Senior Airman in the Medical Services Corps, his training as a military surgical technologist served as an introduction to medicine.  While serving, he received numerous honors including the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Outstanding Unit Award.  Following his military experience, Dr. Fraser attended California State University Chico, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology.  He graduated at the top of his class and made the Dean's list every semester.

Dr. Fraser earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco.  While in medical school he participated in the prestigious Medical Scholars Program and also authored a paper detailing the CT and MRI findings of renal vein thrombosis due to metastatic disease.  His post graduate training began with one year of general surgery internship at the Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California.  Following this, Dr. Fraser attended the Yale University/Norwalk Hospital residency in Diagnostic Radiology.  While in residency he authored a study illuminating the over-utilization of CT angiography for pulmonary embolus in the emergency room setting.

Dr. Fraser received his sub-specialty training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Southern California.  While at USC, Dr. Fraser performed the full range of Interventional Radiology procedures, including diagnostic angiography, trauma embolization, treatment of peripheral arterial disease, aortic stent grafting, uterine fibroid embolization, vein sclerotherapy and thermal ablation, dialysis access intervention, including temporary and permanent dialysis catheter placement (as well as other central venous catheter placement procedures), biliary intervention, kypholplasty/vertebroplasty, as well as oncology procedures such as chemoembolization and radiofrequency ablation.

Dr. Fraser is a Board Certified Diagnostic Radiologist, and a member of the American College of Radiology, and Society of Interventional Radiologists.  He enjoys maintaining an active outdoor lifestyle and being of service to others in the community.

Dr. Joseph Oolut received his initial training at the University of Houston and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1999. He then attended medical school at the University of Texas at Houston and graduated with an MD in 2003. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at UT-Houston Medical School in 2006, served as Chief Medical Resident until 2007, and subsequently completed his Nephrology fellowship at UT-Houston in 2009. He received his training in Interventional Nephrology from Dr. James McGuckin. Dr. Oolut is a member of the American Society of Interventional and Diagnostic Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology, and he currently specializes in all aspects of hemodialysis vascular access maintenance.
